Research: Fashion, costums that are made to move

I am researching performers, and how they use materials to displace space. I am doing this in the hope of learning how to expand on my own artistic expression of displacement of space with the use of the body as a tool of movement and as a blank canvas to work on.  My research is about exploring spacial movement through texture and expansion of materials in creating a space in motion that reaches and moves and reaches and moves...

Diana Vishneva: Beauty in motion, F.L.O.W by Moses Pendleton, Part III.
I am very interested in the combination of movement and fabric in this piece. In this dance you can see through movement of fabric how it can express displacement of space. Stunning in appearance as well as movement. Costume looks like a jellyfish or a dandelion in seed.  Lots of energy and movement.

First Born
An Amazing Choreography By Cynthia Quinn & Moses Pendleton Of MOMIX Taken From Movie Called "First Born".
In my research I found this piece which is similar to the dance above, in that it uses movement with fabric, and by looking i am learning. I am learning how the weight and movement of material moves and can captivate an audience. What captivates me is how the semi-translucent material captures the light and silhouettes the dancer as she moves.
A beautiful performance piece with the use of a large flowing net material to create a gentle graceful movement which also changes or flows into an energy shift of being strong and powerful like the crashing of a wave.

In the next few clips below is my research of the use of light to express movement and energy. Although at this point in time I have no idea of how electronics work but sometime in the future I can see myself using light in either costume pieces or in interactive installation pieces.

Probes; Skin Dresses

Philips Design has developed a series of dynamic garments as part of the ongoing SKIN exploration research into the area known as 'emotional sensing'. The garments, which are intended for demonstration purposes only, demonstrate how electronics can be incorporated into fabrics and garments in order to express the emotions and personality of the wearer.

The marvelously intricate wearable prototypes include 'Bubelle', a dress surrounded by a delicate 'bubble' illuminated by patterns that changed dependent on skin contact- and 'Frison', a body suit that reacts to being blown on by igniting a private constellation of tiny LEDs

Researching performance artist Marina Abramovich for my own performance technique

Researching Marina Abramovich as a performance artists to see what techniques i can learn from her.  I am exploring this because i enjoy performing and may use performance art as a tool for my own artistic expression.
Marina Abramovich:
Body is easiest field for art

Marina Abramovich:
The Abramovic Method, my body, performance, my testament / Exclusive
The Abramovic Method is the artist's will, the climax of an awesome career, which leads Marina Abramovic to Milan for an exhibition and an unmissable live performance. Check out our exclusive interview with Marina!

I see Marina Abramovich as being Authentic and very natural in her performances and i feel with the use of these charicteristic's she reaches out and connects to her audience. I hope that in the future with my own performances that I can reach into my own and connect with the subject and therefore connecting with the audience.

space movement: wire

Exploring the use of wire to express the movement of space

If I had the use of the whole space of the room I would continue curving the wire in big circles and small circles, horizontally and vertically.  I would do this so that us the people(the objects) would have to conform or move to the space, rather than the space conforming to the object.

performance piece:

Exploring the boundaries or lack of, with the movement of space. Expressing how I feel space would feel as it moves. I am using body dynamics as a form of movement meditation to feel into space and how it would feel to be that space. "i sit alone the mountain and i and only the mountain remains" Li Po

For me this would have worked better in a pure white space with neutral clothing, probably black, so the movement of the body would stand out in silhouette against the white background.  By doing this it would take out all the distractions so to focus the viewer on the movement.

The movement of changing space:'Wool installation'

An impression of the movement of changing space using wool as my media.

More video links of the same below:

I enjoyed the exploration of using wool to work with in expressing the displacement of space, but i feel i need to move on from this installation as there is only so far i can go with its movement.

People moving through and changing space: 'wool installation'

When an object moves a space must change
I created an experimental installation piece using a wooden frame to hang wool. I chose to use wool because I feel it has some similar properties to space, such as being an easy movable fluid like material which helps represent the movement of a space. The aim of this installation piece is to express a changing space  The space is an open invitation for people to interact with the space, and therefore leaving the outcome to being unknown.

More of the same below:
Conclusion: with the use of people in these videos, the viewer is compelled to watch the person rather than the wool and displacement of space it creates. Next project with my video work will focuses specifically on the movement of the wool and the spaces between that are created due to the movement.

Research:Yarn, weave, big installation pieces, street art

Research into work that inspires me, that i want to keep a log of so i don't forget

Art and Yarn

Shows how to weave

love making it big and Saraceno (below) definitely does this with his large scale installations. I'm also a textile touchy, get up and dance kinda person so for me art pieces that are interactable intrigued me. Give me a want to explore, go on an adventure feel to them which Saraceno also creates with some of his work.

changing space using wire

As objects move, space must change
Its the space that has to conform to the object, and not the object that has to conform to the space.
Below is a representation of how i imagine space to move.

Conclusion: although i do get the sense of these pieces moving, they are an experimentation of the expression of movement and yet not moving. From these pieces i will now move forward to creating an actual moving piece of work or works.

Space-In between

Space in between is about high-lighting the spaces between objects. These are space that we don't notice.
